Why it deals instead of rerolling

A generator that rolls a fresh random animal every time you press the button will hand you the zebra twice in nine presses more often than you expect. That is correct behaviour for dice and wrong behaviour for almost everything people use an animal generator for. A charades round with a duplicate is a round nobody can score. A class of thirty needs thirty different animals, not thirty draws. So the button here deals: your filters build a deck, the deck is shuffled once, and each press takes cards off the top. The counter tells you how many are left before the pack recycles, and Reshuffle deck starts a clean pass whenever you want one.

You can switch it off. Untick the deck box and every card is drawn independently, which is what you want if you are asking the same question repeatedly and genuinely want independent answers.

What the four attributes mean

Group is the ordinary school-level grouping — mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, invertebrate. These are the categories a sorting activity uses. They are not a modern evolutionary tree: birds sit inside the reptile lineage, and "invertebrate" simply means every animal without a backbone, which is most of them.

Habitat is where wild populations of that animal typically live, and an animal can carry more than one. Towns & farmland is on the list because the animals a child can actually go and look for — sparrow, fox, garden snail, house mouse — belong in a different bucket from the ones they will only ever see in a book.

Size band is typical adult length nose to tail base, or standing height for animals normally described that way. Record individuals were ignored, so a saltwater crocodile is filed by the four to five metres an adult male usually reaches rather than by the exceptional specimens. Some animals sit near a boundary and the call could reasonably have gone the other way; where that happened, the ordinary adult decided it.

Diet uses classroom vocabulary. Insectivore is technically a kind of carnivore, and it is listed separately because sorting activities usually want it separate. Detritivore covers the earthworm and the millipede, which eat dead plant matter. Filter feeder covers animals that strain food from water, from the blue whale down to the giant clam.

Four things it is genuinely good for

Drawing practice. Filter to one habitat and deal six. Drawing a set that shares an environment teaches you more than six unrelated animals, because you start noticing the shapes that a habitat pushes animals towards. Charades and Pictionary. Set the card to Name only, deal one per player, and use the deck so nobody gets an animal that has already been acted. Classification games. Guess it shows group, habitat, size and diet and hides the name behind a reveal button, so a class narrows down from evidence instead of shouting the first animal they think of. Writing prompts. Two cards from opposite filters — a giant ocean filter feeder and a tiny town-dwelling insectivore — is a better story seed than one animal on its own, because the gap between them is where the idea lives.

Frequently asked questions

How were the size bands decided?

By typical adult length from nose to the base of the tail, or by standing height for animals usually measured that way, such as the ostrich and the giraffe. The bands are tiny under 10 cm, small 10–50 cm, medium 50 cm–2 m, large 2–5 m and giant over 5 m. Because tails are excluded, a few long-tailed animals land a band lower than their total length suggests — the ring-tailed lemur is one.

Why are there so few insects when insects are most animal species?

Because this is a props cupboard, not a sample of life on Earth. A list weighted by how many species really exist would be overwhelmingly beetles, flies and wasps, and would be no use for charades or a drawing prompt. The 146 animals here lean heavily towards large, familiar vertebrates, which is a real bias worth naming rather than hiding — if you are teaching biodiversity, say out loud that the deck is unfair to invertebrates.

Does the generator ever repeat an animal?

Not while the deck holds cards. Repeats begin only once every matching animal has been dealt; at that point the used cards are reshuffled and placed behind whatever remains, so a single deal still contains no duplicates. Changing any filter builds a new deck and starts the count again.

Can I use this in a lesson on animal classification?

That is what Guess it is for. One honest warning to pass on: the six groups are a teaching convention. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish are all vertebrates, and the last two of those groups are not clean branches of the family tree — "fish" and "reptile" as commonly used both leave out descendants that belong inside them. It is fine to sort with them; it is worth saying they are simplified.

Limits

The list is hand-written and finite. It holds 146 animals, and it contains what a person thought of, which means it over-represents Africa, Europe and North America and under-represents almost everything else. Attributes are single values where reality is a range: many animals shift diet by season, and habitat entries name where a species typically lives, not everywhere it has been recorded. Common names are used throughout, and a common name can cover several species — "grey wolf" is one animal here and a dozen subspecies in the field. Nothing is fetched from any database while you use the page; the whole list ships inside it, so the tool keeps working with the network off, and it is exactly as current as the day it was written.
